Several foreign stars to attend JA Invitational

Americans Tyson Gay, Sanya Richards and Carmelita Jeter along with Britain's Christina Ohuruogu are among big names expected for the fifth staging of the Jamaica International Invitational track and field meet at the national stadium on May 1.

With the impending Jamaica vs. the United States yet to be finalized, this meet could be billed as a preview to the Jamaica vs. USA match-ups.

Four of the world's top six sprinters including Gay could line up in the men's 100 meters while Jeter is expected to head the women's 100 meter field.

Olympic champion, Britain's Christina Ohuruogu and world champion Sanya Richards of the United States could line up in the women's 400 meters.

Interestingly President of the JAAA Aris Howard disclosed that one challenge that the organizers could face are the requests by management of the athletes including Jamaican athletes, for certain races, which could prevent potential clashes.

Athletes will be able to gain points from the meet to qualify for the IAAF World Athletics final at the end of the season.

The event will cost $61.9 million of which the Government of Jamaica has provided $27 million.

During her announcement, Sports Minister Olivia "Babsy" Grange outlined welfare plans for athletes.

Already her ministry has earmarked a $17 million Athletes Welfare Package and a $10 million insurance benefit package.
